Jul 23 - List: Movies I like

Today I've only got time for a quick entry.

How 'bout a list of my favorite movies?

Spirited Away - Hayao Miyazaki
Howl's Moving Castle - Hayao Miyazaki
The Cat Returns - Hayao Miyazaki
(note, for these three movies the Japanese version with english subtitles is ESSENTIAL! The dubbed English-language version sounds corny in comparison).

A Room with a View - Ivory Merchant

Rushmore - Wes Andersen
The Royal Tenenbaums - Wes Andersen

The Full Monty
Batman - Tim Burton
Slingblade - Billy Bob Thornton
Reckless Kelly - Yahoo Serious
The Matrix & The Matrix Reloaded - the Wachowski Brothers

The Big Lebowski - the Coen Brothers
The Man Who Wasn't There - the Coen Brothers

Hoop Dreams - Peter Gilbert (this one's for you, Dad!)

Hon, how about "Hoop Dreams"? It was about ten years ago that you and I went to see the boys and their families at their NAACP National Convention press conference in Minneapolis, arranged by my good tpt friend and colleague, Robin Hickman.
I'll always remember how warmly William Gates, Arthur Agee, Jr. and their parents embraced you when you told them of your Habitat for Humanity work in the violent community and project in which they lived.
But tragically the violence did not end for Arthur's dad, who you'll recall turned from drugs to a vibrant inner-city ministry. This from the Chicago Tribune of July 23, 2005:
"Berwyn police have charged one man and are searching for another in connection with the December killing of a Berwyn preacher who was featured in the basketball documentary 'Hoop Dreams.'
"Police charged Ronnie Taylor, 33, with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Arthur 'Bo' Agee Sr., 52, who was killed outside his home in the 1400 block of Clarence Avenue on Dec. 15. . . .
"A Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman said Taylor was allegedly paid to kill Agee by another suspect, whom she would not name, because of a fight that occurred between the suspect and Agee years ago."
May he rest in final peace.

Dad's right - Hoop Dreams deserves to be on this list. Consider it appended.
